Another week, and yet another Premier League club is in crisis.

Well, not just one...obviously. Despite playing just two games thus far, there are plenty of clubs from up and down the country who are already enduring mini-crises - Manchester United, Chelsea and Sheffield United to name a few.

One team's current crisis sticks out like a sore thumb though: Everton's crisis.

Here's why:

ALL THE KEY DATES FROM THE 2023/24 PREMIER LEAGUE FIXTURE RELEASE

What's the crisis?

Two games.

Two defeats.

Five goals conceded. The joint most in the Premier League.

Zero goals scored. The joint least in the Premier League

It's not exactly good, is it?

Why are they in crisis?

Everton haven't been a decent football team for quite a while. After skirting the drain of the Premier League for two seasons and just about surviving on both occasions however, fans may have thought that this summer their club would dip into the market and ensure something similar doesn't happen again this time round.

Instead, Everton have spent a grand total of £12m on new signings - the lowest amount any Premier League club has spent.

Yes, less than Sheffield United.

Yes, even less than Luton Town.

Not spending bucketloads in the transfer window is fine if the current squad is performing well, but this Toffees squad, by any stretch of the imagination, aren't right now.

The thumping defeat at the hands of Aston Villa at the weekend - a 4-0 thumping to be exact - was embarrassing, and symptomatic of a squad who aren't up for the challenge at Goodison Park.

When Sean Dyche is coming out after a game and calling his player's "soft", you know there's personnel problems at the club right now that need addressing.

What can they do to rectify it?

Spending more than Luton Town would certainly help.

Spending that money on some attacking spark should be the priority in the final few weeks of what's been a disappointing window for Everton.

That spark could/should be a player like Wilfried Gnonto, a youngster who is keen to find a new club after Leeds United's relegation, and someone who can get fans out of of the seats at Goodison Park. When was the last time Everton had a player like that?
