Grandad who broke the internet by mistaking paint for yoghurt dies
The grandad who became an instant meme after eating paint believing it was yoghurt had died at the age of 91. Bobby found himself at the centre of internet attention in 2019 after his granddaughter Alex posted a photo of him on X/Twitter with paint around his mouth and a tub of paint with a spoon sticking out of it. She explained he accidentally ate it thinking it was yoghurt. He quickly became known as the "paint-eating grandpa" with the photo becoming a popular internet meme and videos of his antics being shared across social media. Writing on Instagram, his granddaughter shared the news that Bobby has died at the age of 91. She shared: “Today would’ve been Bobby’s 92nd birthday. For those who don’t know, he passed away peacefully in his sleep this June. And though he’s missed tremendously, he really did live a long, happy, healthy & fulfilling life as a doctor, musician, father, and grandfather.” She continued: “He loved nothing more than to make people laugh, so having the internet as his audience truly meant the world to him. Huge thanks to everyone who’s supported Bobby boy over the years — I’m confident you guys will keep his legend alive.” In the comments, people remembered Bobby fondly and spoke about how seeing his pictures and videos online was a big part of their online childhood. One person said: “Happy birthday and rest in peace. I remember how much my sister and I laughed together years ago with the yoghurt paint accident bless his soul!!” Another added: “RIP Bobby the goat. Core memory of my teen years was watching the videos of him being posted, always made me laugh and smile.” How to join the indy100's free WhatsApp channel Sign up to our free indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. The Tories accused of making Remembrance Day 'all about themselves'
The Tories accused of making Remembrance Day 'all about themselves'
Remembrance Day is time to remember the fallen, as the memorial commemorates the anniversary of the armistice which marked the end of the First World War in 1918. It gives people the opportunity to remember all those who died in the war, however a number of MPs are being criticised on social media for managing to make the entire thing about themselves. Social media users are criticising Tory MPs who have posted images of themselves laying tributes to the fallen, accusing the posts of being in poor taste. “Just the tories having a private moment to remember our fallen with respect & dignity,” one wrote. “What is wrong with these creatures?” It’s not the first time people have questioned some motives and intentions surrounding Remembrance Day all – not after these rather unusual merch and memorabilia to commemorate the occasion started being sold a while back. But still, the actions of the MPs haven’t gone down well with some. “From the same people who bemoan virtue signalling…” wrote Marina Purkiss, before adding: “Feels really heartfelt… pure coincidence that they all felt compelled to have the same moment of remembrance… and then photograph it… and then post it. “If a Tory MP places a poppy cross for Remembrance Day and no one is there to photograph it to put it on social media, did it really happen?,” John O’Connell wrote. “Lot's of Tory MP's having photo op's in the remembrance garden and putting it on social media for quiet reflection!” another said. “Remembrance is not a photo opportunity…unless you are a Tory MP!” one more wrote. One detail the new Mean Girls trailer is making millennials feel very old
A new Mean Girls musical film is on the way and the trailer is making millennials feel extremely old. The original Mean Girls film that came out in 2004 has secured its place as a cultural classic in the millennial zeitgeist. In 2017, it was made into a Broadway musical and now, a new film version of the musical has got people talking. A trailer for the new film was released yesterday (8 November) and instantly caused a stir thanks to the words, “This isn’t your mother’s Mean Girls” which appear at the beginning. Millennials took to X/Twitter to defend the fact that they are not that old and a large proportion don’t have children old enough to watch the film. For context, millennials are those born between 1981 and 1996, making them 27 at the youngest and 42 at the oldest. One person shared a screenshot from the trailer, writing: “Wait a second”. Mean Girls | Official Trailer (2024 Movie) www.youtube.com Someone else commented: “Boomer and Gen X marketing execs have a very hard time wrapping their heads around the fact that very few 35-year-olds have 12-year-olds these days lol” Another added: “Also imagine the 35-year-olds who were looking forward to watching the remake and just got insulted in the trailer.” “Cause what do you mean I should have a 12-year-old?” another asked. Another wrote: “If I'd had a kid when I was the age my parents were when I was born that kid would be in middle school, instead I'm scraping by to afford having a cat.” The 2024 film is set for release on 12 January. Like the original, it was written by Tina Fey who is also reprising her role as teacher Ms Norbury. Actor Tim Meadows also appears as Principal Duvall. Additionally, actor John Hamm has been cast as the gym teacher Coach Carr, while Reneé Rapp will play the number one “it” girl, Regina George. Why are people suddenly putting their toilet roll in the fridge?
Why are people suddenly putting their toilet roll in the fridge?
A late-night session of TikTok doom-scrolling attracts all types of weird and wonderful going ons in the world. From NPC streaming to mouth-taping and random pickle eating, the platform can be a wild place. But now, people are putting their toilet roll in the fridge – and it turns out there's a reason behind it. The tip has been making rounds across the platform with cleaning influencers and life hack pages quick to jump on the trend. One person claimed the trick comes from the hotel industry. Even an Aldi Nord store jumped in on the action, with their very own demonstration. Apparently, placing a toilet roll in the fridge can act as an odour neutraliser as it absorbs any unwanted smells from foods. Meanwhile, another person claimed they had a completely different use for it, suggesting they use it as a cold compression as it "stays cold for eight hours." @aldinord While some have found the trick impressive, there are other ways to ensure your fridge remains fresh. Firstly, you could simply buy a fridge odour absorber for a couple of pounds. Or, you could go down the lemon and baking soda route. Simply add two to three tablespoons of baking soda and salt to sliced lemons and pop them onto a plate and into the fridge. Keep them there for around six days. CleaningTok has become one of the platform's highest-performing categories – and we can see why. Recently, people "fell in love" with one woman's aesthetically pleasing hotel cleaning routine, which saw her clean her room and unpack quirky essentials on her travels. NPC Miles Morales refuses to break character after security guard confronts him
NPC Miles Morales refuses to break character after security guard confronts him
A popular NPC known as 'Leak World' on TikTok was determined not to break character when a security guard approached him during a livestream. For the blissfully unaware, an NPC stands for a non-playable character in a video game. In reality, it acts as a metaphor for someone who follows the crowd and lacks independent thinking. Online, specifically on TikTok, NPCs have been raking it in from repeating actions and comments on their page. Take 'Leak World' (real name Miles Morales) for instance, who frequently shares content to his page of him cosplaying as an NPC. During a recent TikTok live, he was politely asked to move off private property. "If you’re over there and anywhere on that property, that’s private property," the guard explained to the TikToker dressed as Spider-Man. "This is public property, the sidewalk, right?" Leaks World responded, before showing his followers that he was on a sidewalk. "I’m here to respect the rules. My dad works for the police. This is just what I do." @oldheadrogers @leaks._.world vs The Security & Cops #milesmorales #AI #police The security later returned to ask once again that he move, but the TikToker remained in character. "Nah, I’m gonna do my own thing," he said and continued to livestream with the chat. "I need you to move over there," the security reiterated. "Do you know who I am?" the TikToker hit back. "I’m Miles Morales. I’m not a TikToker, I’m Miles Morales. I save lives every day and this is how you’re gonna treat me?" "Doing NPC streams in public is crazy. Bro has 0 shame. Unlimited confidence. I gotta respect it," one person wrote, while another added: "This trend continues to be the worst thing to ever happen to CoNtEnT CrEAtIoN." What is 'swatting' and why is it stopping Adin Ross streams and 'forcing Adriana Chechik to move house'?
What is 'swatting' and why is it stopping Adin Ross streams and 'forcing Adriana Chechik to move house'?
"Swatting" has caused an Adin Ross stream to be interrupted, and porn legend-turned-Twitch star Adriana Chechik previously revealed that she’s being so badly swatted, she’s going to have to move house. The adult entertainer previously issued a damning rebuke of “beyond childish” pranksters, who have been blighting her life for months. In a furious tweet, Chechik, 31, explained that the emergency services had been called to her house on 12 separate occasions, as she urged the culprits to “grow up”. “Y’all suck so hard. I’m gonna have to move with this swatting sh*t,” she wrote. Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter “You are literally taking police who should be helping people and having them swat me? 8x and 4x for firefighters to come is beyond childish.” For the uninitiated, “swatting” refers to a nefarious trend which largely targets streamers like Chechik. It involves a troll finding out their victim’s address or location and then making a hoax phone call to the emergency services, claiming that there’s extreme violence taking place there. The idea is to make the lie sound as urgent and threatening as possible to prompt an armed response – hence “SWAT”. The perpetrator then keeps their fingers crossed that the police will raid the home during the streamer’s broadcast so that they can watch the dramatic action unfold live on camera. And whilst some would argue that swatting is just an elaborate prank, most will tell you it is, in fact, a dangerous crime that puts lives at risk. In one high-profile instance back in 2019, a teenage Call of Duty player swatted an opponent after losing a game. Police showed up at the wrong address, then shot and killed a totally innocent father-of-two. It is also, as Chechik pointed out in her tweet, a complete waste of the emergency services’ time, that should be dedicated to legitimate crises. One of the most horrific aspects of the 32-year-old’s plight is that she was attacked by swatters even as she recovered from a near-life-threatening injury. In October last year, she broke her back in two places after jumping into a foam pit at TwitchCon, San Diego, which left her facing months of surgery and gruelling rehabilitation. She also lost her unborn child as a result of the accident – later revealing that, unbeknownst to her, she was pregnant at the time. And yet, some of her followers – who seem unfamiliar with the very concept of human decency – decided it would be fun to ambush her. In December, as Chechik lay bedbound, she tweeted: “Tell me how some internet trolls are gonna swat a person whose back is still healing from being broken. Some twitch chatters are a whole different breed of small d**k idiots. “The cops know me now. We legit talk about our life because this happens so much.” Based on her latest complaint, the situation has only escalated since then. But, at least, she suggested action is being taken to find those responsible. One of her fans responded to her tweet, saying: “Moving I think would only give you a brief respite from the bampots, and then it would start again. Time to get a lawyer and PI involved and start to sue the c**p out of both the city for having inadequate response to being repeat called and the people calling them on you.” Chechik replied simply: “[Already on it!!]” Of course, this is not a game, but we hope she nails those swatters once and for all. Adin Ross raided by SWAT team during live stream
Adin Ross found his latest stream being interrupted by a SWAT team in his latest run in with law officials. It’s not the first time Ross has been “swatted”. The controversial Kitck streamer has had a number of his streams shut down while broadcasting to his viewers. Ross and HSTikkyTokky were broadcasting to viewers from a boxing gym when it became apparent that a police team had been called to the location. The officers arrived outside – and Ross quickly realised what was happening, probably because it wasn’t the first time it had happened to him. Adin Ross & HSTikkyTokky Get SWATTED www.youtube.com He assured the people he was with that “we’re good, we’re fine”, as well as helping to reassure viewers. Ross was made to sit outside the building while it was searched, before he was allowed to return inside the gym shortly afterwards. Thankfully, it didn’t cause too much disruption. But “swatting” has become a major problem for some streamers over recent times. The worrying trend sees streamers targeted by trolls, who find the address or location of a figure online before making a hoax phone call to the emergency services, often claiming that there’s extreme violence taking place there. The idea is to make the lie sound as urgent and threatening as possible to prompt an armed response – hence “SWAT”. John Lewis Christmas ad LIVE: Social media reacts to long awaited drop
It may only be the start of November, but John Lewis has already dropped their much anticipated Christmas ad for 2023. This year, the retailer switches out its famed tear-jerker style for something much more light-hearted and wholesome. It focuses on a young boy named Alfie, who spots a 'Grow Your Own Perfect Christmas Tree' kit and asks his grandma if he can have it. He opens the box to find a seed inside which he plants and nurtures as it grows into a giant Venus flytrap called Snapper. The family are wary of the plant, especially when it spots their pet pomeranian. They move Snapper outside and replace it with a generic Christmas tree, but when they see how much it means to Alfie, they all proceed to open Christmas gifts in the garden. The advert is soundtracked by an upbeat song called 'Festa', which means “celebration”. It is sung by the opera tenor legend Andrea Bocelli and written and produced by Le Feste Antonacci. Speaking about his involvement, Bocelli explained he was “delighted to take part in this wonderful and unique tradition of Christmas storytelling”. Since releasing the ad, reactions have been coming in thick and fast online: One person felt like it lacked Christmas spirit... World's tallest woman reveals unique way she has to travel on planes
An airline was required to remove six seats from a plane to make room for the world's tallest woman. Measuring seven feet, Rumeysa Gelgi has been recognised for her height by the Guinness World Records since she was a teenager. Gelgi has a condition known as Weaver syndrome, which causes accelerated growth among other symptoms Last year, Gelgi took to Instagram to praise Turkish Airlines for their hospitality during a flight from Turkey to San Francisco. "This will be my first flight as well as my first travel overseas. But I believe that this experience will be a first for many individuals, not just me," she wrote at the time. "Because, as you know, the option of travelling as a stretcher passenger is generally reserved for patients who are being transferred from one intensive care unit to another. "It is an alternative for patients who are referred from one hospital to another and need an ambulance. "However, because I couldn't sit for lengthy periods of time due to my scoliosis, or spine curvature disorder, I had to fly on a stretcher." She later went on to share a few snaps of the journey while thanking the crew on board. "A flawless journey from start to finish. There are so many people I have to thank.. @turkishairlines officials and staff, @igairport staff, @airclinic team, all cabin personnel, especially our cabin chief, @flysfo officers and medical team, customs police and many other departments that I can't count." She continued: "This was my first flight, but it certainly won't be the last. From now on, I will be very honoured and happy to fly to different parts of the world with @turkishairlines." What is the Uncanny Valley make-up trend on TikTok?
The hashtag #uncannyvalley has over 500 million views on TikTok - but what is it? The term 'uncanny valley' refers to "a common unsettling feelings people experience when androids (humanoid robots) and audio/visual simulations closely resemble humans in many respects but are not quite convincingly realistic" according to TechTarget. Now on TikTok, creators are trying to give viewers the same unsettling feeling through makeup and filters in order to try and make themselves look like androids. Creator Zara (@alkiiwii) posted herself wearing 'uncanny valley makeup', where her features have been eventuated to look, well, uncanny. It is one of the most liked videos under the hashtags with 1.8 million likes since posting the video five days ago. In the video she lip-syncs an audio from the video game Detroit Become Human which follows three androids in the year 2038. The audio, from the android Chloe, says: "I only exist thanks to the intelligence of the humans who designed me. You know, they have something I could never have [...] a soul." With Zara's lip-syncing slightly stilted to make her mannerisms even more robotic. @alkiiwii UNCANNY VALLEY #uncannyvalley #uncannyvalleymakeup #uncannyvalleyeffect Comments under Zara's video include "the first uncanny valley that's worked for me." "The difference between the mouth movements and voice make it even better," commented another creeped out viewer. A third added: "This one actually scared me." Another popular audio used in the trend comes from a TIME article from 2013, where a robot telemarketer denied it was a robot. "No, I am a real person," the robot says. "Maybe we have a bad connection, I'm sorry about that." "Will you tell me you're not a robot? Just say I'm not a robot, please." The human on the phone asks. "I am a real person." The Robot claims. @beautybyzoeg #uncannyvalley #uncannyvalleyeffect #makeup #fyp The eiree feeling induced by the uncanny valley makeup and accompanying audios has viewers hooked though. 'Pretty' TikToker sparks debate by calling out 'average girls'
'Pretty' TikToker sparks debate by calling out 'average girls'
Body positivity is all about celebrating yourself and feeling confident. However, one woman’s self-administered pats on the back haven’t always gone down so well on social media. The TikToker, called Elle, has ostensibly dedicated her account to telling the world how “pretty” she is. Now, this auto-appreciation may not sound too outrageous (after, all isn’t that what many users do, in one form or another?), but what viewers have really taken issue with is how she addresses other women. “Average girls” is her preferred moniker for people she deems to be less attractive than she is. In one clip, Elle mimes along to the song ‘Bed Peace’ by Jhené Aiko, while the text overlay reads: “When I compliment average girls ’cause I know it means a lot coming from a pretty girl like me.” The eight-second video racked up more than 12 million views and 1.8 million likes in just five days, as more than 27,900 commentators voiced their opinions on the boast. @caterpiye So pretty today “I need this confidence,” one admirer wrote. “You look so good!” said another. Meanwhile, others insisted she could big herself up without putting other people down, with one stressing: “It’s easy to call yourself pretty without calling other girls ‘average’." However, hundreds of others pointed out that the whole thing was probably just a joke. And, to be fair, take one glance at her TikTok and you’ll see that almost every upload is titled ‘So pretty today’ or a variation on that theme. Elle clearly enjoys ruffling people’s feathers – captioning one video: “Me scrolling past all the hate comments trying to ‘humble me’ knowing the’yre all average girls on their 3rd bag of chips today.” @caterpiye So pretty today. My eyes look like small marbles in this one Another reads: “When I compliment girls wearing makeup ‘cause it means a lot coming from a girl that looks pretty without it.” And a third says: “Tried my best to look like an average girl tonight so I can blend into the crowd.” And whilst many people have failed to register that she’s just being playfully provocative, others have insisted that she deserves to rate herself highly. “Okay jokes aside, you’re actually really pretty,” one wrote. While another added: “Bae, you slay every day. Remind them.” Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. Doorcam captures moment bear makes off with family's takeaway delivery
A family who ordered a takeaway was disappointed when they opened the door to find their order was missing, but it wasn't a neighbour who stole the food... it was a bear. In the video posted to TikTok by @alexvelasquezoficial, a delivery driver walked up to their home in Orlando, Florida, to place a Taco Bell order for Laidy Gutierrez and Daniel Bula on the front porch and took a photo of the bag to prove it had been successfully delivered. But just moments later, the doorcam caught a big black bear on camera as it sauntered up to the front door and picked up the Taco Bell goods worth $45 in its mouth and proceeded to wander off. @alexvelasquezoficial Increible la inseguridad en esta ciudad de (Orlando Florida) definitivamente ni estamos seguros ni en nustra propia casa👮♀️ladron en captado en camara However, the bear wasn't done and came back for more. "He came, and he grabbed the food – then he came again for the soda," Nicole Castro told Fox News. The door cam then showed the Velasquez family as they appeared confused at their food order being nowhere to be found. Gutierrez told the same publication that bears are pretty common in the Longwood neighbourhood and have to check their security cameras often due to this.
