Streamer Pokimane hits back at 'broke' viewers who criticised price of her cookies
Streamer Pokimane has hit out and called viewers “broke” over complaints at the prices she charged for cookies. From being attacked live on a stream to unwittingly helping a shoplifter escape a store, you never really know what to expect when tuning in to any given stream. It’s fair to say that fans of the streaming sensation Pokimane were not expecting the price that she was charging for her controversial Myna cookies after launching a new business venture. On 13 November, the Twitch star launched Myna Snacks, which has begun selling “Midnight Cookies” – a gluten-free chocolate cookie infused with Vitamin D and flavoured with sea salt. They are available to purchase online and cost $7 per bag (£5.60) but are only available in a 4-pack, 8-pack or 12-pack. This means the minimum amount an average buyer can purchase is $28 worth, plus shipping costs. Pokimane hit out at those criticising the product’s price, calling them “broke” for not wanting to pay that much. In a live stream, she said: “When people are like ‘oh my god $28 for cookies’. It’s four bags, that’s $7 per bag. I know, I know math is hard when you’re an idiot. But, if you’re a broke boy just say so.” But, her comments have sparked backlash, with many suggesting she is out of touch with real life and the struggles faced by the general population. One person argued: “These streamers are getting soo out of touch with reality it’s actually disgusting.” Another called her an “out of touch millionaire calling people broke for not buying her overpriced cookies”. Nigel Farage is, unfortunately, being spoken about more than ever as he entered the jungle for I'm A Celebrity... Now, an old clip has resurfaced of the former MEP being asked about his expenses where he appears to get extremely uncomfortable. The clip, from a 2014 episode of Have I Got News for You, starts with Farage saying: "I think it's absolutely disgusting, all these elected politicians using all these expenses to better themselves, it's disgraceful." Then one of the show's panelists, Ian Hislop replies: "It is absolutely disgraceful Mr. Kettle." Stephen Mangan, the host of the episode then reads aloud the following quote from Farage: "What we've seen is a Prime Minister who clearly is totally disconnected with how the voters in Britain feel about MPs' expenses." Mangan then adds: "The same Nigel Farage who in 2009 revealed that as an MEP he'd claimed in expenses £2 million of taxpayers' money." Visibly uncomfortable, Farage tries to worm his way out of scrutiny saying, "and who was it that bought up the issue of £2 million and me and taxpayer's money? Denis MacShane." MacShane is a former MP and was convicted in 2013 for false accounting in regards to expenses-claims. "Yeah he's in jail, but you're not," Hislop then pointed out to Farage. Mangan then continues: "As a tax-funded MEP Nigel Farage is an equal opportunities employer, some of our money has gone to his wife, and some to his mistress." In the current climate, the rental market worldwide is incredibly competitive and even after securing a place, many have found their landlords to be completely unhinged, with one charging a tenant extra for her pet fish. One Toronto tenant hoping to rent out a room has received strong criticism after stating that the tenant has to sleep in the same bed as them for $900 (£525) a month. The rental advertising post was for a “shared bedroom in a lake-facing downtown condo”. The “unhinged” ad drew attention after Toronto realtor Anya Ettinger shared it on her TikTok with the caption: “Just when you thought the Toronto rental market couldn’t get any worse, it did.” In the video, Ettinger revealed the landlord was looking for an “easygoing female to share the master bedroom and the one queen-sized bed”. A TikToker has opened up about the “scary” dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning after she was hospitalised with it from lighting scented candles. Scented candles are a common household item that helps to improve a space’s ambience. But many TikTok users were left shocked after content creator Emy Moore revealed she ended up in hospital. In the video, Moore could be seen pulling monitor stickers from the hospital off her body as she explained exactly what happened. She said: “I had like five candles, scented candles, going on in my room for hours yesterday and then blew them out right before I went to sleep.” Moore explained that as she tried to fall asleep she started to feel very strange and felt like her “body dropped”. The TikToker said the sensation felt like her body separated and there were two halves of her. She also revealed she started to lose her sense of self and had a rapid heartbeat. @emymoore3 never buying a candle EVER again After being taken to hospital by her parents, Moore said she kept forgetting what she had just said and was shaking as though she was on the cusp of having a seizure. Some of her other symptoms included a headache, dizziness, confusion, dehydration, shortness of breath, chest pain, blurred vision and high blood pressure. Moore explained to doctors about the candles and was hooked up to oxygen which made her feel better and her symptoms go away after a few hours. “I literally had no idea you can get carbon monoxide poisoning from candles,” one person commented. Another said: “I’m glad you’re ok, but 5 candles AT ONCE??” Someone else commented: “I also had carbon monoxide poisoning and I too had that second sense that something wasn’t right. It’s crazyyy.” “It says not to leave candles burning for more than 3-4 hours depending on the candle for this reason to everyone in the comments…” someone else warned. MrBeast was reduced to tears during his latest challenge, which saw him buried alive in a coffin for seven days. The YouTuber, real name Jimmy Donaldson, is best known for his highly elaborate and expensive stunts and challenges which can test his and others own physical limits. In his latest video Donaldson attempted to better the record he set in 2021 when he was buried alive for 50 hours. This time the 25-year-old was encassed in a transparent coffin where the rest of his crew could see him via cameras and talk to him via walkie talkies. Donaldson did have food and water supplies with him to help him last the seven days but it proved to be far more mentally tasking than he had anticipated. During several moments in the challenge, including when he was being freed from the casket and the dirt, started to cry. Donaldson even admitted that he didn't understand why he was crying during these moments. Although he made it through the challenge there was a concern that he might not be able to stand up properly as he might have developed blood clots in his legs. Luckily for him that didn't transpire and he was given the all clear by doctor leaving him to celebrate passing the challenge and also achieving more than 200 million subscribers on his YouTube channel, with the milestone passing while he was underground. This new achievement for Donaldson comes not longer after he was accussed by fellow YouTuber Rosanna Pansino of 'faking' his videos. Few are worthy of the title influencer like Matilda Djerf. An icon for many young women around the globe, fans of the 26-year-old have gone crazy for her style, which explains why her brand, Djerf Avenue, has made millions of dollars. Djerf founded her clothing brand in 2019 with her partner and CEO Rasmus Johansson. Since 2019 Djerf Avenue has gone beyond clothes, releasing accessories and homeware which have been adored by fans. She is calling me from her office, I compliment her on her outfit - from Djerf Avenue, of course - and she thanks me, explaining that it's "forever blazer" day at the office, an initiative from the social media team for all to wear the company's forever blazers, a customer favourite. She looks put together and cheery, the image we see on social media does not seem a fake one, her golden hair intact as always. Our conversation starts with us talking about her life before Djerf Avenue and internet fame. "I come from a small town, if you dress up or if you dress a little bit differently than the rest of people, it's a little bit frowned upon." But it is Djerf's style that has got her where she is today, her daring to be different generated $34 million in revenue last year for her brand. And the hype around Djerf and her clothes doesn't look as though it's dying down anytime soon. It's not easy to be so fashionable that the majority of young women want to replicate your style. I wanted to find out what influenced the fashion influencer. Apart from Hannah Montanna, which I think all women who grew up watching the Disney show can relate to, Djerf speaks fondly of her mother, Ulrika, who features prominently on both Djerf's social media and Djerf Avenue's marketing. "My mum has always been my fashion icon, not caring what other people think," she tells me. "She does her own thing. Which has inspired to do my own thing!" Family is clearly central to how Djerf lives her life, they constantly feature on her social media, with her parents and sister often modelling Djerf Avenue's clothes. "I'm a true homebody, I've always enjoyed just being surrounded by my family," she says with a grin on her face, telling me about her childhood and family vacations. "Since the start [of Djerf Avenue] they've always been my biggest cheerleaders." The early days of Djerf Avenue was just Matilda and her partner Rasmus. They had no team and did everything themselves, but Matilda's family were there to help. "When we did our first shoot they [Djerf's parents] came with us, they've seen everything, they even helped us pack orders for the first few months." With over 3 million followers on Instagram, it can be hard to stay grounded within yourself as you're bombarded by the opinions of millions of strangers online. "The support of my friends and family is all I really need," she tells me. "I'm so grateful to have a safe space." Djerf's family and friends' support was prominent just a few months back when Djerf Avenue hosted a pop-up store in New York, accompanied by their first-ever fashion show for their Remake Collection, which was hosted at the Guggenheim Museum. "The possibilities in New York just felt endless," she says as she explains her choice of New York for the brand's third pop-up (their first was held in LA last year and their second in Stockholm earlier this year). "But whenever we do something in person it feels daunting. I'm always really nervous that nobody's going to show up or nobody's going to like it." Despite Djerf's nerves, it seemed she had nothing to worry about. Across the three days the pop-up was open (Aug 31 - Sept 2), social media was flooded with pictures of those queuing up to purchase both fan-favourite items and pop-up exclusives. "The team work so hard to make it happen, we pour so much love, energy and time into every single project that we do," and I can tell through the screen. Djerf is evidently animated and passionate about her business and the team that helps make everything run smoothly. But despite the nervous energy that inevitably comes with such enormous projects, Djerf trusts the community she's built up over the years. "Our community is the most loving community and I know they will show up. It's what makes me always want to make sure we're doing everything we can to give our community the best possible experience." "I think about how much time these people are taking from their lives to stand in line at our pop-ups, and they spend their money on our items, so I never want to fall short. The pressure is really daunting, but it gets me going." The pop-up was followed by a fashion show at the Guggenheim Museum on September 3, where the brand debuted its Remake Collection. The models were fans of Djerf Avenue (including Matilda's mum) and showcased diversity at its centre. "I wanted to show the fashion world, you don't need to look one kind of way to be able to walk a runway," she explains. "We wanted to capture the beauty of our individual community members." "I want to meet our UK customers!" She exclaimed. "If it gets to September next year with no news you need to message me 'Matilda where's the pop up!'" I assure her, and on behalf of all UK Djerf Avenue customers, to message her if this is the case. "But there's so many places in the world we want to go, it's hard to narrow it down." Naturally, I had to use my opportunity to ask about any upcoming collections or releases, and Matilda managed to tell me so much and so little at the same time. "We're just getting started, we're actually going into a completely new category which I'm really excited about, and that will be launching around Spring 2024. It's been years in the making." "On top of that we're doing our first-ever collaboration with a person this year. That's coming up very, very soon!" Finally, as our conversation draws to a close I ask her if there are any goals she has for herself or Djerf Avenue in the next five years. And in typical Matilda Djerf fashion, she tells me: "I've never had like, a three-year plan or a five-year plan. Where was I even five years ago?" "So much happens even in a month, so it's so hard to dream up where I will be in five years. But really, I'm always thinking about what I can do to give back. A new trailer dropped yesterday for Sydney Sweeney and Glenn Powell's romantic comedy Anyone But You. Before the trailer, Powell and Sweeney did a jokey introduction where the pair teased each other in true romcom fashion. Then, an unexpected pair decide to recreate the introduction: Nathan Fielder and Emma Stone. Fielder and Stone are starring in A24's The Curse and parodied the rom-com's trailer, with the significant contrast between The Curse and Anyone But You, making it all the more funnier. Whilst Anyone But You follows Powell and Sweeney going to a destination wedding after a single and hating each other. The Curse is about Fielder and Stone who start a problematic HGTV-like show in New Mexico. Immediately social media were loving the quick-turn around from Fielder and Stone. Fielder carried the joke on further, posting a 'statement' to Twitter/X, writing: "I've just been informed that the introductory clip leading into our trailer for The Curse which I posted to social media earlier today has similarities to the trailer introduction for the romcom movie Anyone But You. I want to be very clear - we shot this promo over six months ago, and I am seriously concerned that the marketing team at Sony Pictures somehow saw our promo and copied it."
